About Lycona Photography
Meet Your Cape Town Photographer
Hi, I’m Lyle Conrad | Welcome to My World of Photography
First and foremost, thank you for stopping by. The fact that you’re here, reading these words, tells me you’re someone who values memories. You’re planning a trip to Cape Town, or perhaps you’re a local wanting to see your city through fresh eyes, and you’re looking for someone to capture those moments beautifully. I’m honored to be in your consideration.
Let me introduce myself properly. I’m Lyle Conrad, the person behind Lycona Photography, and I’m what you might call an unapologetic lover of life’s little moments. I’m that person who’s always pulling out a camera to photograph whatever catches my eye, the way sunlight hits a building, the genuine laugh of a stranger at a cafe, an unusual cloud formation drifting over Table Mountain. I’ve learned to slow down and notice these things, and photography is my way of sharing that perspective with others.

My Photography Philosophy: Keep It Simple, Keep It Real
You won’t find any complicated manifestos or pretentious artist statements here. My philosophy issimple: I love beauty in all its forms, and I love capturing it for people who appreciate it just as much as I do.
I believe most of us move through life too quickly. We’re so busy checking items off our to-do lists that we forget to pause and appreciate the small wonders around us. A child’s infectious giggle. The way a couple looks at each other when they think no one is watching. The golden light that transforms an ordinary beach into something magical at sunset.
These are the moments I live for. These are the moments I want to capture for you.
When you book a session with me, you’re not just hiring someone to take pictures. You’re inviting a fellow appreciator of beauty to document your Cape Town story. I’ll be the one who notices the little things, the way your dress moves in the ocean breeze, the sparkle in your partner’s eyes, the pure joy on your child’s face as they chase waves, and I’ll make sure those moments become images you’ll treasure forever.

Location & Preferences
As a freelance photographer, I shoot on location throughout Cape Town and surrounding areas. I believe the best locations are ones that offer abundant natural light and minimal distractions, places where you can relax and be yourself while I capture the magic.
For outdoor shoots, particularly portraits, golden hour is my absolute favorite time to work. Those early morning and late afternoon windows when the sun sits low in the sky create soft, flattering light that makes everyone look their absolute best. The warm, golden tones add a dreamy quality to images that simply cannot be replicated at midday.

Why I Love Photographing Cape Town Visitors
There’s something incredibly special about seeing Cape Town through the eyes of someone experiencing it for the first time. The way your face lights up when you round a corner and suddenly Table Mountain appears in all its glory. The awe in your voice as you watch the sunset sink into the Atlantic. The pure delight of tasting your first South African wine in the Winelands.
I get to witness these moments up close, and I get to preserve them for you. It’s honestly the best job in the world.
Over the years, I’ve worked with hundreds of travelers from across the globe, solo female adventurers seeking empowering portraits, couples celebrating honeymoons and anniversaries, families creating holiday memories that will be passed down through generations. Each person brings their own story, their own energy, and I feel privileged that they trust me to document their journey.
What Sets Me Apart as Your Cape Town Photographer
Natural Light Enthusiast: I’m obsessed with light, natural light, specifically. There’s something magical about the way golden hour transforms everything it touches. That soft, warm glow that makes skin look radiant and scenes look dreamy? That’s my favorite thing to work with. I’ll often suggest scheduling your shoot during these magical windows (early morning or late afternoon) because I know the difference it makes in your final images.
Candid Storyteller: While I’m happy to guide you with posing (especially if you’re nervous in front of the camera), my true love is capturing genuine, unposed moments. The laughter between poses. The quiet glance between partners. The spontaneous joy of a child discovering something new. These authentic moments are what you’ll treasure most years from now.
Relaxed Approach: I know being photographed can feel intimidating. My job is to make it feel like hanging out with a friend who happens to have a camera. We’ll chat, we’ll laugh, we’ll explore beautiful places together. By the time our session ends, you might forget you were even being photographed.
Local Expertise: Cape Town is my home, and I know its secrets. The best spot for sunrise photos with little to no crowds. The hidden beach most tourists never find. The perfect wine estate for that romantic couples shot. I’ll share all my local knowledge with you, ensuring your photos are uniquely Cape Town.
My Journey as a Photographer
I’ve been behind a camera for as long as I can remember. What started as a personal passion, capturing whatever caught my eye, gradually evolved into something more. Friends noticed my photos. Then friends of friends started asking if I’d photograph their special moments. Before I knew it, Lycona Photography was born.
Today, I’m grateful to do what I love every single day. I wake up excited about the people I’ll meet, the places we’ll explore together, and the memories we’ll create. There’s no greater satisfaction than delivering a gallery to a client and hearing them say, “I didn’t know I could look like that” or “You’ve given us memories we’ll cherish forever.”

Beyond the Camera
When I’m not behind the lens, you’ll find me exploring Cape Town with my own camera in hand (old habits die hard), discovering new cafes, hiking in the mountains, or simply sitting somewhere beautiful and watching the world go by. I believe that being a good photographer means being a good observer of life, and I try to stay in that observant mindset always.
I’m also something of a tech enthusiast, always staying current with the latest photography equipment and editing techniques so that my clients receive the highest quality images possible. But technology is just a tool, the real magic happens in the connection between photographer and subject, and that’s where I invest most of my energy.
